I remember the crack of a rubber ball against my palm on a dusty street in Venezuela. As a kid, pelotica de goma — our street version of baseball — was more than a game. We played anywhere: in alleys, parking lots, beaches, or in front of parked cars that doubled as bases. That simple rubber ball shaped my love for baseball.
Today, as a coach in Virginia watching kids playing in the grounds of Mclean Little league in a small diamond on the floor, I see young players diving and laughing in this mini diamond. They're playing "handball", similar to "Baseball5" that I grew up with but with a different name "Pelotica de goma".
Winter Training, Reinvented for Coaches and Players
Every winter, when the fields freeze, practices stop. Coaches face the same challenge: they need to keep players sharp and engaged. In the U.S., most kids switch to other sports or rest. But "Baseball5" offers a new option — a full-speed, no-equipment version of baseball that fits in any gym or blacktop. All you need is a 2.8 to 2.9-inch rubber ball and five players per side.
In Baseball5, the batter hits the ball with their hand instead of a bat. There's no pitcher, no gloves, and no downtime. Games last 15–20 minutes and every player hits and fields each inning. It's fast, fun, and perfect for youth development when outdoor baseball is impossible. It keeps kids active, building agility, coordination, and instincts while they play.
"Baseball5 is the training tool we've been missing — one that keeps young athletes sharp, social, and inspired all year long."
From Pelotica de Goma to the Olympic Stage
Baseball5 is not a new invention — it's the evolution of pelotica de goma and other Latin American street games. The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) launched Baseball5 in 2017 to make baseball more accessible worldwide. It's now played in over 100 countries and will debut as an official medal sport at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.
The format is simple but revolutionary:
- Five players per team
- Five innings
- Coed rosters
- Field is just 21 meters per side
- No bats, no gloves — just raw skill, teamwork, and passion
For me, it's surreal to see a game that started on Venezuelan streets becoming an Olympic discipline.
Why Baseball5 Is a Game-Changer for Youth Development
- ⚾More repetitions, faster learning: Players get five times more touches per game than in traditional baseball.
- ⚡Explosive agility: Short sprints, quick reactions, and fast defensive plays develop athleticism.
- 👁️Hand-eye mastery: Barehand catching and hitting improve coordination and focus.
- 🧠Game IQ: Quick decision-making under pressure builds smarter ballplayers.
- 🤝Coed teamwork: Boys and girls play side by side, learning respect and collaboration.
In winter, it's also a cardio workout in disguise — 15 minutes of non-stop action equals an interval training session. Players stay fit and engaged while having fun.
Two Baseball Worlds, One Mission
Growing up in Venezuela, baseball wasn't just a sport — it was hope. For many kids, it was a way out of poverty. In the U.S., baseball is often part of a broader educational path. Two worlds, same love for the game. Baseball5 connects them.
It provides Latin American kids with an accessible entry to competitive sport and gives American players a way to keep improving year-round. Baseball5 is a bridge between cultures: it's fast, inclusive, affordable, and now global. Whether a player dreams of college ball or the Olympics, Baseball5 can be their platform.
The Baseball5 Nation Winter League in Virginia/DC
Here in Virginia/DC, we launched the Winter Baseball5 League under Baseball5 Nation — the region's first coed B5 program. What began with a few kids has grown into a full community. We play in gyms, recreation centers, and even parking lots. Parents love it, coaches see improvement, and players stay active all season.
Our goal is to build a model that other cities can follow — a fun and affordable way to develop youth athletes when fields are closed.
A Call to Coaches and Parents
To my fellow coaches: Try Baseball5 this winter. Mark a gym floor with tape, grab a rubber ball, and let the kids play. You'll see energy, laughter, and athletic development unlike any drill session.
For parents: It's a way to maintain your kids' health and motivation during the cold months. No screens, just sweat and smiles.
Baseball5 isn't replacing traditional baseball; it's enhancing it. It's the training tool we've been missing — one that keeps young athletes sharp, social, and inspired all year long.
