Baseball5: A Young Player's Guide
Welcome to the exciting world of Baseball5! You're about to learn a super fun, fast, and cool street version of baseball that you can play almost anywhere. All you need is a ball and some friends!
Part 1: The Basics
Everything you need to know to get started
What is Baseball5?
Baseball5 is a simple version of baseball that is played 5-on-5 and lasts for five innings. It's fast-paced, which means you're always in the action! The game is co-ed, meaning boys and girls play together on the same team.
What You Need to Play:
- • A rubber ball - That's it! No bats, no gloves
- • Two teams of at least five players each
- • A playing area (grass, basketball court, any open space)
- • Cones, tape, or even flour to mark lines and bases
The Field
The field is a square with a base in each corner.
Bases
Home plate, first base, second base, and third base. Distance: 13 meters (42.5 feet) between bases
Batter's Box
A 3x3 meter (10x10 foot) square behind home plate where you hit the ball
No-Hit Zone
For players under 15: 3 meters (10 feet) from home plate. Your first bounce must go past this line!
Part 2: How to Play the Game
The basic flow and objectives
🎯 The Goal
Offense (at bat)
Score runs by hitting the ball and running around all bases to touch home plate safely
Defense (in the field)
Get three "outs" to switch sides and get your turn to hit
🏃 How a Game Works
- 1The game has five innings. Each inning = both teams get a turn to hit
- 2Visiting team hits first, home team starts on defense
- 3Follow your batting order (1-5) throughout the game
- 4Team with most runs after 5 innings wins!
Part 3: Rules of Offense (Hitting & Running)
How to hit the ball and run the bases
🥎 Hitting the Ball
- 1Stand completely inside the batter's box
- 2Hold the ball and hit it hard with your palm or fist. No gloves allowed!
- 3First bounce must land in fair territory and go past the "no-hit zone"
- 4Under 15? You get a second chance if you mess up! Older players: it's an out
❌ Illegal Hits (You're OUT!)
- • Stepping on or outside the batter's box when hitting
- • First bounce lands in foul territory
- • Hitting over the fence without bouncing first
- • Completely missing the ball
🏃 Running the Bases
Basic Base Running
- • Hit the ball fairly? Run to first base immediately!
- • Touch first base in foul territory to avoid collisions
- • Stay in the 1.5-meter safe area after reaching base
- • Must touch all bases in order: 1st → 2nd → 3rd → Home
⚠️ Important Rules
- • Stay on your base until the next batter hits
- • Leaving early = OUT!
- • Always avoid crashing into defenders
Part 4: Rules of Defense (Fielding)
How to get outs and play defense
🛡️ Getting Outs
All five defensive players must be in fair territory when the ball is hit.
1. Force Out
Touch the base a runner must go to while holding the ball (common at first base)
2. Fly Out
Catch a batted ball before it touches the ground
3. Tag Out
Touch a runner with the ball when they're not on a base
⚾ Fielding Tips
No Gloves!
Catch with bare hands. Always use two hands for security
Ready Position
Stay low with feet ready to move. React quickly!
Throw Quickly
Small field = less time. Use short-arm motion for fast throws
Positions
First base, second base, shortstop, third base, and midfielder. You can move around for every play!
Part 5: Drills to Get You Started
Fun exercises to improve your skills
🔥 Warm-up is Important!
Dynamic Warm-ups (15-20 mins)
- • High knees
- • Butt kicks
- • Side shuffles
- • Ladder drills for quick footwork
Stretching (5 mins)
After your body is warm, stretch everything from neck to ankles
🎯 Fun Practice Drills
1. Four Corners Drill
Four players form a square and throw the ball clockwise/counter-clockwise. Practice rolling, bouncing, and tossing!
2. Rolling Drill
With a partner, roll the ball hard on the ground. Focus on getting low, using two hands, and bringing ball to chest.
🏆 Team Competition Drills
3. Batting Relay
Teams in rows facing a wall. Hit ball against wall from behind cone. Wall hit without bouncing = point for your team!
4. Baserunning Relay
Teams at home and second base. Run all bases and hand ball to next teammate. First team to finish wins!
Have Fun, Play Hard, and Enjoy the Game! 🎉
Remember: Baseball5 is about having fun with friends while learning teamwork and sportsmanship.
Frequently Asked Questions
Baseball5 requires minimal equipment: just one rubber ball and base markers (which can be improvised with cones, plates, or even drawn lines). No bats, gloves, or protective gear are needed, making it highly accessible.
Key differences include: 5 players per team (vs 9), hitting with hands (vs bats), 5 innings (vs 9), mixed gender teams required, smaller field size, and games lasting 15-20 minutes. Baseball5 is designed to be faster, more inclusive, and playable anywhere.
No! Multiple runners cannot occupy the same base in Baseball5. The rules are the same as in baseball or softball - only one runner is allowed per base at any time. If a runner is forced to advance to a base that is already occupied, the runner on that base must advance to the next base or be called out.
Each team must have a minimum of 2 players of each gender on the field at any time, with a maximum of 3 players of the same gender. This ensures gender equality and mixed participation in every game.
Runners score by touching all bases in order (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and then crossing home plate. With the 2024 rule update, runners from third base can use the batter's box area to score safely, reducing collision risks.
Official tournaments are organized by WBSC and national federations. The Baseball5 World Cup is held every two years, and the sport will be featured in the Youth Olympic Games. Check the WBSC website for upcoming events and local tournament information.
